Recreatiegebied SpaarnwoudeSpaarnwoude recreational area is situated in the middle of the urbanized part of Noord-Holland province and serves as a buffer between Haarlem, Amsterdam en Velsen. The sumptuous and woody region is very well suited for cycling, hiking, swimming. On top of this, there are skiing, climbing and golfing facilities throughout the region.

Velsen
The old township of Velsen is located in the proximity of Villa Zomerdijk. It is well worth the visit.
IJmuiden
This is where the well-known sea locks are set-up and were all the ocean liners on the way to Amsterdam pas through. IJmuiden has a broad seashore and is easy to get to.
Dunes
The district of Velsen is right beside the Kennemer-dunes, a vast and stunning sand dune area. One of it’s entrances is at the ruins of Brederode, the remainders of a castle which was originally constructed in 1292. Visitors are allowed in.
Estates
The estates of Waterland, Beeckestijn and Velserbeek are all in a 2.5 mile radius from Villa Zomerdijk. On the Beeckestijn estate on can visit the herbarium..
Spaarndam
In the nearness of Spaarnwoude is the township Spaarndam. Spaarndam hometown to Frans Hals (1583-1666) the famous Dutch renaissance painter.
